Jacinta Mew - LOCAL HOOKER

Jacinta Mew - LOCAL HOOKER

I grew up in Maldon with six other siblings. I’ve stayed in Central Victoria to be close to family, although I plan to travel eventually. I lived in Melbourne briefly to study but city life isn’t really for me.

I first heard the expression ‘North Northcote’ about ten years ago. Since then the Castlemaine area has developed quite a lot. You can always pick a tree changer in a crowd, especially as a barista; they’re the ones ordering ‘single origin magic’. The Melbourne crowd have opened new cafes, revamped the old ones, as well as boutiques and pubs. Castlemaine is definitely a more appealing place to hang out now.

I started crocheting when my daughter Harriet was born. I loved the idea of making special handmade toys, clothes and blankets for her. I studied YouTube videos and crochet books. I am addicted to Ravelry.com, a crochet/knitting mecca for free patterns. I see beautiful things on Pinterest too. When I had more time on my hands, I did a lot of custom orders; the customer would provide me with a brief and I'd just go nuts. My favourite piece was turning a talented seven year old boy’s illustration of a two-headed dragon into a plush doll for his mum after he passed away.

Now that my daughter is a threenager and I’m back at work full time, I just crochet for family and lady friends, who seem to be always taking turns falling pregnant.

The best thing about living here is being with the fambam. I have heaps of support raising Harriet. Education is top notch, shopping is great, food and coffee is the bomb. It's forever developing into such a hip and bustling little destination.

Favourite haunts: For coffee, I need to plug where I work; we roast our own at Coffee Basics, always the best part of fronting up at work. In Maldon I am in love with The Wool Stash for the most beautiful yarn. I like to shop at places like Tribe, Corner Store Merchants, Castlemaine Vintage Bizarre and Platform #5 for quirky gifts. For a cocktail and ladies night, The Good Table for a Negroni and cheese is the best!

If you’re thinking of moving out here, shop local and support small businesses to keep the area booming.
